A major bummer. She competed with Emmylou when it came to my crushes in the early 70s. It must be really awful to have a voice like that and then boom, games over for you. Getting old sucks. I'm afraid we'll be reading more of shit like this as time moves on and it will make me/us sad. Unless stuff gets to me first (since I'm 67).

That blue note noted, I just happened to see the recent no-holds-barred doc on the Eagles and they showed sequences of them performing as her backup band in the beginning of time. God, it was wonderful. I can't count how many times I went to the Troubadour. Sigh.

I never saw her live but I went back into vinyl and have about 5 of her LPs and do have the CD w/ EMMYLOU and Dolly. In her day as said she was unbeliveably beautiful as on the covers of Hasten Down The Wind and Simple Dreams.I hope I loaded these right my eyes are going and not trying to show gratuditous audio porn if you will.

Ah, that's too bad...

Saw her many times, best were with Jackson Browne in mid-70s. Here are some pics I have from somewhere off the web of how I recall her...

Dang Tell, both pics are killers. Thanks. Maria was another on the fantasy train. I always wondered whether she could have fit in with the Dead instead of she-that-shall-not-be-named. Heck, now I can't get Midnight At The Oasis out of my head.

Lucky pigs! I'm so old. How old are you? I saw Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys open for Van Morrison. In Pauley Pavillion no less. Way before the Dead. :)

I'm getting up there also but she just never played the Bay Area that I could remember.I did see Emmylou Harris 2x at the Old Walorf and Bonnie Raitt multiple times.I also caught Maria singing b/u w/ the Jerry Band on the Green Peace ship Rainbow Warrior. As for MR.Morrison I saw him which appeared as a warm up for a tour in a tiny club called Rancho Naciso in Marin somwhere and opening for him was the unknown Huey Lewis and the News. The second and last and unfortunate time I saw Van M was at The Great American Music Hall and he was so fucking drunk that he was falling all over the place sang like crap and we went to the mngmt and got our $ back for this poor excuse of a garbage performance. This was the only time I had ever asked for a refund and it was that obvious they did not hesitate.

Yeah, Van was a weird duck. That time I saw him @ UCLA he hardly ever looked at the audience. Turned his back and faced the band most of the time. You and I must have traveled in the same music circles. We all saw the same folks just in different places. It was like they all helped each other the ladder. Saw Joni Mitchell open for CSNY. And when she came back the next year, she headlined and Jackson Browne opened. And the girls peed. Next year he headlined and Bonnie Raitt opened. It was a musically wonderful time.

Diamondhead, this is so true and here's another coinkydink.I saw Joni Mitchell w/ Tom Scott both opening then being her bakup band in the gym of Alburqure University on my way to the Bay Area cira 73/74.Probalbly spelt that city wrong ,just have to deal w/ it.Then the 1st time to see CSN was a huge Bill Graham DOG Show in Oakland w/ I think Jessie Colin Young, Joe Walsh and Barnstorm possibly The Band then CSN doing a marathon multiple set gig of their own.My God the shows I've seen it would be easier to name who I didn't see.

My ears are fine it's my eyes that seem to be going. I'm usingg drug store glasses for fine print and besides that all is ok. Became quite the audiophile over the last few years.I just saw Leon Russell opening for Hot Tuna in late June. The venue was beautiful The State Theater New Brunswick but they were using old school stacked black p.a boxes of old and it sounded that way for at least Leon's set, very muddy. It vastly improved and Tuna was searing but I was wondering why they did not use line arrays like you see now at every venue....

I'm starting on drug store glasses too. But audiophilia seems far far away. Right now, all I hope for is good bass.

Maria w/JGB on Rainbow Warrior docked at the pier just east of Fisherman's Wharf in the afternoon in August (I think) '77? Huey Lewis was unknown nationally at the time, but had been playing bars in Berkeley-and elsewhere around the bay, I'm sure- for years, regularly. I was lucky enough to see Van sober in a small club in North Beach in '74/'75. I also used to see him picking up his mail in Bolinas occasionally, but that's another story not musically related. Anyway, is that the JGB show you're talking about?

I believe so, after the show the ship left to distrupt the French from firing an airburst thermo nuclear bomb. They bothered the French security zone so much that when the RW berthed in Perth the French had 4 commandos setting mines and sank the ship at the pier, killing 2 boat sitters. They were caught and brought to trial and that's were I have to leave it. The show was great and I will try to c/p a great shot of Jerry and his rig and John kahn to his left in color.Just scroll down a bit. They are saying the ship's name is the James Bay 8/19/77.I don't ever remember 2 benifits at dockside.http://greenpeaceblogs.org/2012/08/31/rocking-for-the-environment/

Brother, thanks for the response (and the attachments!). Cool, 36 years later, to connect with someone who was at that show. Take care and stay in touch.
